Grebes loved their first Forest School afternoon with Mrs. Grieve. They learned the rules of Forest School, made name tags tied with reef knots, had a campfire and enjoyed some free exploration time.
Classes
This week at Fledglings…
This week at Fledglings we have been learning all about Nocturnal animals. We have loved reading the story ‘Owl Babies’ and using the story sack to support our story telling. We also enjoyed experiencing the snow!
Bonfire Forest Schools
The Bitterns enjoyed a fantastic ‘Bonfire Night’ special Forest School session, learning about fire safety, roasting marshmallows, making s’mores and getting creative with a bit of poetry!
A big thank you to Mrs Grieve for making it so inspiring!
Grebes – Predators and Prey
In Science Year 4 played a game to learn about the relationship between predator and prey populations. They took on the roles of lynxes and snowshoe hares living in the Arctic tundra to see how nature exists in a balance: if there are too many lynxes, they end up starving due to lack of prey; not enough lynxes and the snowshoe hares end up consuming the vegetation… And starving!
Grebes/Herons – Cluster Football Tournament
Our Year 5/6 football team did us proud this week in the Cluster Tournament, finishing 3rd of 8 teams. The players will have a more detailed update coming just after half-term. The next event will be Cluster Cross Country so get training!
Coots PE
We were very lucky to have the sun shining for our P.E. Lesson with Mr Ward this week. We were busy skipping and weaving in and out of poles.
Coots are getting excited for the half term holiday and we look forward to hearing everyone’s news when we return to school.
Autumn half term 1 2024
To start the school year we focused on the topic ‘all about me’. The children were encouraged to bring in photos to create family trees; we painted life size self-portraits, as well as concentrating on our own characteristics. The children enjoyed measuring themselves, recording this by sticking masking tape to the window. We then introduced interlocking cubes for the children to stack them to their height. The average height was around 30 cubes tall!
During this half term, we have also been spending a lot of time discussing our emotions and feelings. To support this, we have completed various activities on The Colour Monster story, where the children have been identifying, naming and understanding emotions. This is something we will continue to focus on throughout the year.
As we near the end of the half term, we are now starting to learn all about autumn. The children have been exploring pumpkins and learning different facts about them. The children have used some wonderful describing words whilst talking about the pumpkins – “sticky”, “gooey”, and “super slimey”. We have also been observing the changes in their environment, with trips up to the school field to find items such as conkers, acorns, brown/orange leaves. The children have enjoyed mark making and leaf rubbing with the different sized leaves.
