To start the school year we focused on the topic ‘all about me’. The children were encouraged to bring in photos to create family trees; we painted life size self-portraits, as well as concentrating on our own characteristics. The children enjoyed measuring themselves, recording this by sticking masking tape to the window. We then introduced interlocking cubes for the children to stack them to their height. The average height was around 30 cubes tall!
During this half term, we have also been spending a lot of time discussing our emotions and feelings. To support this, we have completed various activities on The Colour Monster story, where the children have been identifying, naming and understanding emotions. This is something we will continue to focus on throughout the year.
As we near the end of the half term, we are now starting to learn all about autumn. The children have been exploring pumpkins and learning different facts about them. The children have used some wonderful describing words whilst talking about the pumpkins – “sticky”, “gooey”, and “super slimey”. We have also been observing the changes in their environment, with trips up to the school field to find items such as conkers, acorns, brown/orange leaves. The children have enjoyed mark making and leaf rubbing with the different sized leaves.
